Queen of Hearts

Volume One: The Crown

by Colleen Oakes

What a wonderful book ! A great start to a wonderful fairytale series, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

In Queen of Hearts, Dinah the princess of Wonderland Palace is a  free-spirited yet stubborn teen who longs for the day when she will reign at her father’s side. Dinah and her brother lost their mother as young children. Dinah avoids her father The King of Hearts at all costs due to his neglect and hatred towards her. At one point the King announces his past infidelity to the kingdom, and introduction of Vittiore, his illegitimate daughter. It soon becomes apparent that Vittiore is now her fathers favorite daughter, this situation causing Dinah to only despise her father even more.

Many of the similarities to the actual Alice in Wonderland tale are with the stories characters. Dinah’s mentor Harris, shows similarities with the character Rabbit. The Kings adviser is Cheshire the Cat, and we all know that can’t be good. Dinah’s brother Charles, who sufferers from a mental disorder is  The Mad Hatter. His title remains consistent with the unique and beautiful hats he designs. Then there are the Kings army of cards, their roles as guards depending on their suits is fun and unique. Other than this the story is completely a unique experience and wonderful read.

The original story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland had never caught my interest, and for this reason I was not sure what to expect from this story. Yet, I remained open-minded and looked forward to seeing how this story would pan out. I found this story fascinating, enchanting and completely brilliant. In the end I was only disappointed that this story was so short. However, I very much look forward to the next book in the series.

I gave this book a 5***** Star Review.

Not every fairytale has a happy ending.

This is the story of a princess who became a villain.

A Father’s Betrayal. A Kingdom with a Black Secret. A Princess Slowly Unraveling.

As Princess of Wonderland Palace and the future Queen of Hearts, Dinah’s days are an endless monotony of tea, tarts, and a stream of vicious humiliations at the hands of her father, the King of Hearts. The only highlight of her days is visiting Wardley, her childhood best friend, the future Knave of Hearts — and the love of her life.

When an enchanting stranger arrives at the Palace, Dinah watches as everything she’s ever wanted threatens to crumble. As her coronation date approaches, a series of suspicious and bloody events suggests that something sinister stirs in the whimsical halls of Wonderland. It’s up to Dinah to unravel the mysteries that lurk both inside and under the Palace before she loses her own head to a clever and faceless foe.

Part epic fantasy, part twisted fairy tale, this dazzling saga will have readers shivering as Dinah’s furious nature sweeps Wonderland up in the maelstrom of her wrath.

Familiar characters such as Cheshire, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter make their appearance, enchanting readers with this new, dark take on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Genre: YA/fantasy crossovers
